Welcome to SMT new team member for 2013 - Ryan

Ryan knows his way around the BBQ circuit and has been competing on his own.    SMT first met Ryan a couple of years ago at Jake's Place and soon he has become one of our dear friends.   In past seasons, Ryan has joined us for several comps.

Stop by and say Hi to Ryan this year as our new member of the team.

September Fest BBQ and Rib Eye - Omaha, NE

Labor Day weekend, SMT traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to compete in the September Fest BBQ and Rib Eye Competition.   The September Fest is Omaha's summer grand finale and is a four-day celebration at the CenturyLink Center.

Musical entertainment and car shows are a big part of the festival and so are the contests for kickboxing, poker and barbecuing. Marvel Comics' official Spider-Man will appeared and the Omaha Rollergirls had an exhibition.

The grandkids enjoyed the carnival and Kiddie Kingdom with games, rides and events.

Gary and Tammye was able to explore Omaha, the home city of Union Pacific Railroad.  For dinner, the Spaghetti Works in the Old Market area is the place to dine.   The meal was fantastic.

The weather was hot and nothing like we left Kansas City with.   Kansas City received 5-7 inches of rain while we were gone thanks to a tropical storm.

We were surprised by the number of teams from Kansas City.   Some of the teams were Smokin Wolves, Dodge County Smokers and Stix and Chicks.

The competition included Rib Eye Steak.   In the first round, we needed to get a call in the top ten to move on to the second round.   It was intense waiting to see if we made it to the second round.  Once we saw Phil pull up, we knew we had made it.   Now the pressure was on to season and cook the second round steaks in 30 minutes.

Other turn-ins included a dessert category which Tammye took First Place.    Her side dish also received a call - Third Place.

Results for September Fest in Omaha:

23 chicken, 8th in ribs, 27 pork, 6 in brisket, 14th overall.

1st round rib eye 7th place, 3rd place side dish, 1st place dessert.

In July SMT was on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.    Tammye & Gary are in the photos.

Great Mall of the Great Plains BBQ Contest and Festival  May 18 - 19

SMT attended the 2md annual event.  This year the contest and festival was moved to May.   Last year the event was held in 100 degree heat but this year the weather was gorgeous.   Mid 80's and a slight breeze made for a wonderful weekend.

On Friday night we had a few family and friends stop by to enjoy the bands, carnival and of course BBQ.    We did not have a large crowd which meant we could enjoy everyone who did stop by.

SMT was able to get a 9th Place call in Pork.

4th Annual VWF Post BBQ Challenge - April 20

SMT competed at the 4th Annual VFW Post 846 BBQ Challenge in Overland Park, KS.   The weather was on the chilly side in the 50's during the day and upper 30 on Friday night.   Thankfully the wind was not a factor.

Again, SMT did not have a full crew.  But Ryan with Fat Boy's BBQ was able to help out again. Thank you from our Sponsor, OakRidge BBQ for the tips on brisket.  Mike has a wealth of knowledge and his spices at the best.   .

On Friday evening, was Tammye's first turn-in.  For the Wild Turkey Honey competition, she turned in a bread pudding and sauce made with Wild Turkey Honey.   We could not keep Gary out of the left overs.   Dinner - Ryan and Gary cooked chicken wings and rib tips.   Ken and Mark also stopped by and added cole slaw and baked beans dinner.   Dinner was fantastic and we enjoyed visiting with friends.

Saturday morning, the VFW hall invited all the teams for a full breakfast buffet.   We can not say enough on how well organized this competition was.   If you were in need of anything, the volunteers were there.   We will make this competition an annual event for us.

There were 75 teams that competed in this year's event.

Results:   16 Place Overall.    48 Place in Chicken.  12 Place in Ribs.   14th Place in Pork.   23 Place in Brisket and 10 Place in Dessert.

Smoking on Big Creek - March 30 - 31

Smokin on Big Creek in Pleasant Hill, Missouri was a new contest for us this year.   Proceeds from the raffle, people's choice and other events support Operation BBQ Relief, Pleasant Hill Meals on Wheels and other local charities.   Each team competing was also asked to bring a grocery bag of ten or more canned goods
that will be donated to the Lay Clergy Council’s Food
Pantry in town.

On Friday night we entered the People's Choice contest.   SMT cooked 20 pounds of chicken wings and 20 pounds of pork.   Although we did not get a call, we had a blast.

Saturday was another wonderful day.   Although Aaron and Rod was unable to attend, Ryan and Ken stepped up to the plate.  We thought everything we turned in might get a call, the judges had a different mind set.  The brisket was overcooked but Ryan was able to save the day.   Results:   Overall:   43/ 74 teams   Chicken:   56    Ribs:   52     Pork:   20 and Brisket:   45.

North Kansas City - March 9-10

The first contest of the year is in the books.  North Kansas City starts off the BBQ season and has always been home for us.   This year Mother Nature was on our side with warm weather.  Friday was rare a gorgeous day in the 70’s and everyone wanted a break from the endless winter.

NKC would not be the same without our traditional friends and family party.  This year's menu included ribs, pulled pork, salads, cheesy corn, dips and of course dessert.   Of course, a party could not be complete without the cold beverages.

NKC was the first time SMT was together as a team this year.   With everyone’s busy schedule, SMT did not have a chance to practice as a team like last year.  This year we also decided to change the cooking order.   Aaron is now Brisket Master, Rod is on pork, and Gary is back to cooking ribs.

Saturday SMT did not have our timing down.   There were several little mistakes and miss steps that normally would not have been an issue.   This may have hurt us this year with the judging scores.

We would like to thank all the family and friends that came out on Friday night to support the team.   We really enjoyed cooking on for our family and friends.
