NKC Missouri State
BBQ Championship
North Kansas City, MO
Smoke Me Tender BBQ team kicked off the 2009 barbecue season at North Kansas City's Snake Saturday contest. The competition included 73 other teams, up from 2008. This year's Snake Saturday event marked the 25th nniversary of NKC's St. Patrick's celebration. With a 2-hour parade, carnivl, items for sale and special displays, the event draws tens of thousands.
In honor of the St. Pat's theme of this event, a "corned beef" category and award was offered. Although this category is not sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS), over 50 teams threw their hat in the ring. Smoke Me Tender BBQ barely missed the top 10, coming in 11th with a smoke rueben-style sandwich.
The team's best placing in an individual category was for chicken, which earned a 5th place ribbon and prize money. They also turned in ribs, pork butt and brisket, all sanctioned, as well as a dessert entry in another non-sanctioned category. Overall, the team was ranked 21st out of the 74 teams entered.
Last year at Snake Saturday, we came in much lower in the overall ranking. This year, we moved up to the top 1/3 of all the teams. When you consider that this was the first time the team has cooked together since last fall, this is a great start to the 2009 season.
The next contest on our schedule is Rock'n Ribs in Springfield, MO April 16-19
