The Great American BBQ

May 21 & 22, 2010

The name says it all, The Great American Barbecue.  While many events on the barbecue circuit take years to evolve into a major event, this relative newcomer started off big and has stayed that way.  This year, 192 teams competed in the Open division.  The contest was held May 19-22 at Capital Federal Park (aka Sandstone) in Bonner Springs, Kansas.   Regular updates from the venue were aired on channel 4 (local Fox channel) via meteorologist Mike Thompson, who was also entered in the contest.

SMT entered for the "whole enchilada", the sanctioned meats and also the non-sanctioned wings and sides.   In addition to cooking for the competition, the 2010 sponsors were treated to a barbecue dinner on Friday night.  The good folks from Goodyear’s Dipman Auto Service in Olathe seemed to enjoy themselves.

For a while it didn't seem like any food preparation could be done, as a huge swarm of bees was in the neighbor's camp and it didn't seem safe to be outside.  But a professional beekeeper was called in to collect the bees and soon it was back to business as usual.

The first turn-in was chicken wings, and Nun tried his hand this year.  His efforts brought in a 6th place ribbon.  On Saturday morning, next came the sides.  Beans, vegetable, potatoes and dessert were carefully prepared for judging.  Third time was truly the charm on dessert.   SMT was delighted to receive a perfect score from the judges, and earned a special medal for this achievement.  Overall, SMT placed 6th in sides and brought home several ribbons.

There was stiff competition in this event.  Many experienced and big name teams were entered.  SMT members anxiously waited to hear their name called during the awards ceremony.  Chicken results came and went without a call.  But they didn't have to wait much longer, as they placed 9th in ribs.  Rib specialist Aaron, must have his mojo working  just right, this is his second top ten placing in a row for ribs.  Overall, SMT was ranked 19th out of the 192 teams.

The Great American Barbecue is special to the team because it was the very first contest we ever entered.  It would be a dream come true to walk out with the big trophy and check - but it wasn't in the cards this year.  But just wait until next year!!
