Smoke Me Tender BBQ team, competed in the Cross Points Cook-off in Shawnee, Kansas, September 12-13, 2008.   The annual competition saw 28 entries, including several nationally known teams.  It got off to a rocky start when severe weather related to Hurricane Ike roared through on Friday evening.  Instead of prepping their food, they were holding down awnings against heavy winds and rescuing supplies from torrential rain.  It got so bad that some less devoted teams packed up and left!   Finally the weather died down enough to fire up the smoker and get down to the business of slow-smoking brisket and pork butt all night long.

When the judging was completed on Saturday afternoon, the team had earned firth place overall, their personal best so far in a sanctioned contest.   The event also feature a non-sanctioned “People’s Choice” category for pork butt, and the 2008 People’s Choice was Smoke Me Tender’s offering.
